I think Pokemon is the only cartoon that ever showed the repercussions of the villains’ failure. It wasn’t all self-indulgent speeches and fabulous evil style with these three: every time one of their wacky schemes failed it meant a loss of money and resources, another mark against them at headquarters, another barrage of criticisms from their boss, and another night spent starving and exhausted and downtrodden. Team Rocket didn’t want to win against the good guys so that they could take over the world, they wanted to win so that they would receive the reward of food and shelter for the night.
I always thought that was the most amazing and tragic thing about Team Rocket— as often as it was played for laughs (read: all the time) when they had a spotlight episode that focused on their day to day lives it was…well pretty heart breaking, especially early on when Jesse admits to having to eat snow shaped like food as a kid because her family was that poor. Then there was James, who was so desperate to live his own life he opted to be that poor and no matter how much he complains would still rather go hungry than go home. The sense of consequence worked into the narrative really resonates with them as opposed to Ash, who, as a “legitimate” trainer has the resources available to him to make sure he will never go hungry or without a roof over his head.

Only now am I wondering if Pokemon is homophobic because Attract only works if the other Pokemon is the opposite gender. Or are there just no gay Pokemon? lol
