I remember going to Star Trek conventions when there was no TNG, DS9, VOY, etc. What you repeatedly heard in those days was how Star Trek was so much different than any other Science Fiction of its time because it always made serious attempts to say something important. It respected the intelligence of its audience enough to consistently confront them with thought-provoking parallels of important issues and events of the time. Gene Roddenberry tested every script with one basic question: What’s it about? Every script had to be about something - something larger than just people in space doing stuff and things. This is what made Star Trek special. Other science-fiction shows of the day were content to be simple adventure stories set in space with little substance or meaning - and those shows have been long forgotten while Star Trek continues to endure almost five decades later. This used to be a universal understanding about Star Trek and the test by which every new production was judged against. This is why I have been continually stunned at the popularity of NuTrek, since JJ Abrams has effectively eviscerated all of those wonderful characteristics from Star Trek.

Why is this so hard, for so many to understand. He isn’t making Star Trek, he is making Star Wars with the Trek name on it. There is nothing wrong with Star Wars either, but there was a reason they were two different things. Long live Prime Star Trek.

To those who don’t get the joke and/or who are commenting with other examples of ships and water… this is based on an actual Abrams quote in which he thinks to boldly go where no man has gone before means that you can put the Enterprise underwater because no one has done that and it’s in the spirit of Gene Roddenberry somehow. I’m not simply nitpicking the stupidity of throwing the Enterprise in the ocean (what a fitting metaphor), absurd as it is, but criticizing the fact that Jar Jar really has no idea what he’s talking about. And that’s my problem with him: he’s doing a franchise he knows NOTHING about and doesn’t even have the courtesy to try respecting it. And since spaceships in the water has been done in Trek before, guess what… that just further proves my point that Abrams doesn’t know anything.

It’s not a holier than thou attitude, it’s making an observation and having a critical opinion about how Star Trek is currently being handled. You want to talk holier than thou, this “WHO THE FUCK CARES [IF YOU DON’T LIKE THE REBOOT]” and “your fucking useless, pedantic bullshit” attitude is exactly what I dealt with everywhere when the reboot was first released, because god forbid anyone have anything critical to say about a shallow movie with the Star Trek label slapped on it by someone who has proven in his own words time and time again that he just does not care about the franchise. So I’m not phased by it anymore. I got used to being bullied into not being allowed to voice my opinion on the matter. But recently, I’ve discovered that with news of the next installment, a lot of other Trek fans are also becoming annoyed at the development of so-called Star Trek. Just because you don’t care and because it’s really old doesn’t make mine or other people’s arguments less valid.

I like how every reboot defense dissolves into a matter of somehow being told you can’t like something. Nobody is ruining anything for you. Nobody said you have to agree. So not sorry that some of us feel that Star Trek is actually being ruined for us and want to voice that.

I’m not sure how I feel about this since the Enterprise isn’t capable of landing on or taking off from a planet. This is a continuation of the same problem from Star Trek (2009) which portrayed the Enterprise under construction outside of Riverside, Iowa, despite the fact that it was supposed to be built in orbit over San Francisco. As a Constitution-class starship, the struts holding the saucer and warp nacelles above the secondary hull would not have been strong enough to withstand Earth gravity, which is why the Enterprise has only ever briefly entered the upper reaches of the atmosphere, not to mention the ship has no landing gear, unlike an Intrepid-class starship. Granted, the Enterprise is shown crashing in this image and, while its seals would ensure that it remained positively buoyant, it would never be able to return to space under its own power.

That said, while I understand that J.J. Abrams’ films are intended for the Star Wars crowd rather than the traditional Trekker, I hope that the success of Abrams’ films will lead to a television series, continuing the visual style and dynamic of the movies, but incorporating more of the spirit of earlier Trek television series and films.

This is quite a fair amount of my reasoning too (Seriously though, ships the size of NCC-1701 cannot simply land on a planet, not take off from one) and that is one of the many, many reasons it bugs me to the point I just can’t like it.

I want my prime!trek to continue please. This just isn’t the same.

Seriously WTF, they even made a poster of this total bullshit? It’s not a submarine, it’s supposed to be a spaceship. There is no way the ship would take that, let alone get back into space. Jar Jar is so out to lunch. We need to get past these movies and get back to a new series in prime canon. There have been good Star Trek movies, but Star trek has always been better suited to TV. I want to get back to exploring space and humanity in the future. Not this mindless explosion and lens flare filled drivel.

Listen Paramount, we are your loyal fans that have given you a lot of our hard earned money, time to give us something in return. I own everything you ever out out on film and TV except this horrible garbage. Please give us a new show in the prime universe. Get someone really good to write and direct it, trust me, I will be there to watch it, and so will all the other loyal fans of prime Star Trek. You have all the material you need to make an amazing show. Find someone like Ronald D Moore or Joss Whedon and get this done. Don’t give it someone like Jar Jar who didn’t like Trek and made a movie that wasn’t for Trek’s fan base.

Top 5 soundtracks

This is going to be more like games I really like that also happen to have music I like, but:

1. Duke Nukem 3D - I don’t care if it’s old and crappy, I loooove the music from this game.

2. Wolfenstein 3D - same concept as Duke, basically. Even older, crappier music but fits the game perfectly, IMO. Varies from creepy to intense and exciting, just like Duke level music.

3. Ace Attorney/Gyakuten Saiban series - I’m even more biased toward this choice because of the orchestral soundtrack that was done with music from the game.

4. Metroid series - Probably my favorite Nintendo music.

5. I feel like this is a cop-out, but Super Smash Bros. Brawl - I think they did an amazing job with the remixes in this game. Even the music from games I’m less familiar with is really enjoyable.

Have you ever enjoyed a movie tie-in game?

The Terminator for the Sega CD is probably one of the best for creating the right mood from the movie but I don’t have the necessary skillz to ever beat that. Also, the soundtrack is super awesome and should probably be added to top 5 soundtracks. I think the movie tie-in game I’ve played the most though is probably Aladdin on Sega Genesis, lol.
